CRA-Russian Center Lecture Series,
Russians in America, Part I
History of Russians in America, Part I, was presented by historian Anatol Shmelev, at the San Francisco Russian Center on January 21, 2011. The presentation was organized by the Congress of Russian Americans and all donations were to benefit the Museum of Russian Culture. The lecture was in English, an important consideration for attracting those who did not speak fluent Russian but were interested in the history of ethnic Russian settlers in America. The lecturer vividly presented the mosaic of backgrounds of the ethnic Russian immigrants who came to America before World War II – the mass exodus in the aftermath of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, the earlier immigration from the Western Provinces of the Russian Empire and the Carpatho-Russian immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The lecture, accompanied by photos, depicting various historical events, churches, communities and organizations, was very interesting and well-received by the full-to-capacity lecture hall. History of Russians in America, Part II – 1941 to the present – is planned to be presented in the fall. A. Shmelev is a research fellow, curator of the Russian and Commonwealth of Independent States Collection and the project archivist for the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty at the Hoover Institution. He received his PhD from the Institute of Russian History, Russian Academy of Sciences, in 1996.
